Life is given for love

Before I begin what is likely to be yet another blog that puts you all to sleep I want to give you a little background on the title of this blog.

“Life is given for love” is a quote I fell in love with last summer while visiting the Dachau concentration camp in Germany. It was exactly what I needed to hear at that moment in my life, and after yet another trying year I realized that it was something I would need to hear continuously throughout my entire life.
I will forever have this quote with me and I believe that maybe this is a quote other people need to carry with them as well since it seems that this world is full of people who believe the opposite - that their lives were given to hurt and belittle others. I am referring to every form of hatred. People who kill and physically hurt others, as well as people who purposely hurt each others feelings because it provides them with some sort of sick pleasure.

Now I think I can say with confidence, that everyone has been hurt by another person at one point or another in their lives, some more than others, but everyone has experienced pain. The thing is, childish name-calling and shit talking should be left where it belongs, HIGH SCHOOL.

In high school it was funny when people made up fake emails and talked shit about people on the internet with a cloak of anonymity protecting them. It was funny because you hadn’t grown up yet and matured. The thing is, I have NEVER in my life thought that it was funny to do so because it’s not so funny when you’re on the other end of it, even only once. Clearly some people still haven’t grown up which is truly pathetic because you would think that past the age of 16 you wouldn’t see a point in wasting your time on people you apparently don’t even like. It’s even more pathetic that some people feel the need to say things over a blog rather than to a person’s face, because they can’t even own up to their own words.

Do you really need to go back to kindergarten and be taught one of the golden rules all over again? Here, let me help you out

The Gazette is listening…

…God help us all.

I have just discovered something very upsetting and I feel it is my duty to step in and inform the masses.

Those of you who know me probably know of a column I used to have in the Dawson Plant called “Overheard at Dawson”. This column, along with my other contribution “Plant Apparel” were my pride and joy. 

I used to read “Overheard in New York” (www.overheardinny.com) religiously and constantly talk about it. I would spend hours reading and searching the website until a friend finally said “Someone should do this for Montreal, I hear ridiculous things all the time. “Overheard at Dawson” was born that day.

Walking in the college became my favorite pastime and the things I heard blew me away. I would hang out alone in the cafeterias (by choice of course )with a book as my cover, or walk around the school with my headphones on, fooling my victims into talking about ridiculous topics in my presence. No one was safe to speak freely around me, no one. The column’s main contributors were the Plant editors and teacher themselves. Among my favorites from the Plant editors were “Where the hell is my woman beating stick?” and “I love to prance in my underwear! I prance in them all the time!” And who could forget our beloved teacher yelling out “Is there someone on My dick? Who’s on my dick?” “my dick” was of course the name of a play at the time, but no one had to know that.

I recently picked up The Gazette and flipping through it, I came across their version of Overheard. It sucked. I don’t mean some of them were bad. THEY WERE ALL AWFUL. To start off, there were only 4 quotes. They also came in a plain black box with plain ugly font - no Helvetica, which we all know is God’s gift to fonts. There was no picture of the overhearer with a large ear designed by a wonderful photo editor. But then again I guess they aren’t lucky enough to have said wonderful photo editor and overhearer. Still, those weren’t the only problems. Some of them weren’t even meant to be funny they were just… there. Needless to say it was a very upsetting moment for me. More upsetting than when The McGill Daily created a Plant Apparel-like cover. Even more upsetting than when I was recognized as the overheard girl despite the absence of the oversized ear I was photographed with.

My solution to this crisis is simple. I have decided to continue Overheard on this blog. It may take me a while to get started since I don’t really have the opportunity to overhear much lately in the office I work in alone… but anytime I walk the streets of Montreal you can bet I will be listening

Facebook

… is driving me insane.

I’m sick of it but I can’t escape! Even though I’m done school now and I have time to waste on facebook I’m sick of wasting my time with it at all.

I’m sure anyone who has facebook has had the experience of looking through someone’s profile for like half an hour and then saying to yourself “I don’t even like this person! and now I hate them even more!”

So why do it? If I know I hate people why must I look at their profiles? It’s like I just want to be reminded that I hate them or I need some info to fuel my hatred further. I know we learned about something like this in Commmunication Theory but I obviously wasn’t listening very well. I believe it’s on my final next week. The whole idea that even though we hate something we will continue to watch it (if its a show or movie), or obtain info about it somehow so that our opinions will be validated. The same way I hate Degrassi but will continue to watch it so that I can list the reasons why I hate it. Yes I watch Degrassi from time to time. And yes I know I have just been severely judged by you all.
Anyways all this is the reason why I deleted facebook for one whole week. Unfortunately following that long week I caved and returned to it. The sad thing is I didn’t even miss it. I know everyone’s like “Yeah yeah Mel, sure you didn’t miss it.” but really, I didn’t! I was actually doing good and it felt really good to not take study breaks every 2 minutes to see what was happening on facebook, which by the way nothing was! It also felt good to not come home exhausted but have the need to check facebook before bed, and then only get to bed 2 hours later because I ended up stalking someone I despise. The real reason I added it back was I realized that there are certain people I don’t know how to reach without it. Let’s face it there are certain people you would message on facebook but wouldn’t necessarily call. It doesn’t however mean that you don’t actually need these people for some things.

Now my main complaint about facebook. There are certain people who have told me that they love facebook because they can check how their friends are doing whenever they want because they don’t always have time to call. This reason upsets me because think of all the time you spend on facebook. If you took that time and called a different friend up each day then you would know how they’re doing and it’s much more personal than writing on their wall, like everyone else does. Now you may say that you wouldn’t have time to call all your old friends up but let’s be real, you only actually truly care about maybe 15 people out of your facebook friends. I guess it all really comes down to would you rather have 400 acquaintances, or a few real friends with voices you can actually recognize? All facebook does is encourage us to talk to each other less and make us feel more alone because we barely know our “top” friends.

The truth is you may be able to find out what a person did with their summer, or what they’re studying in school from their facebook page, but you definitely can’t tell how they are truly doing. A status full of anger can’t even begin to express the real pain a “friend” may be going through and unless you personally take the time to call your friends up and see how they’re doing, when you finally do you may find out that they’re not really your friends anymore. Some people are only now beginning to realize this about me because they assumed my facebook page said everything about me. Well it doesn’t. And I’m sure yours doesn’t either.

I realize that this whole thing kind of resembles a PSA warning about facebook, but it’s meant to be more me telling you to reach out to your friends a little further than their wall. You may realize people need you more than you think.

Living through TV

So this has been a really shitty week.. no wait month… no wait year.

After tomorrow school is finally over for me besides exams in two weeks. Things should be good but of course people always find ways to ruin my happiness. You know that feeling when you think you know people so well and then you realize that they’re actually probably constantly talking behind your back? It’s a feeling I associate with high school because that’s the last time I witnessed such immaturity.

Times like this call for optimism, something I lack. Since I’m just about the most pessimistic person I know, it’s times like these where I look to others for support. It’s times like these where I turn to Buffy and Veronica Mars.

For those of you who don’t know either of them, fuck off and please don’t ever approach me. Or I guess you could just go rent them and watch every single episode (I swear I’ll know if you missed one) and then approach me.

Back to what I was saying starting with Veronica Mars.

Watching Vmars is probably the best mood boost I’ve come across. Especially season 1 because that’s when she’s kind of angsty but still rising above the immature losers in her school, aka the 09ers. Veronica is constantly catching her enemies in less than flattering situations and it’s so much fun to laugh at them with her. The big thing though is that a lot of Veronica’s enemies started off as her friends but they’re stupid losers who think that popularity is the most important thing in life. When something pisses her off she manages to stay cool in the moment because she knows that she will get anyone who messes with her back 10 times worse. I’m so incredibly jealous of her talent for revenge. In short, Vmars is the ultimate role model for girls. She’s smart and strong and I wish I was her

*sigh* Buffy is just perfect… well not really, she has her faults but there are still parts of my life I wouldn’t mind giving up for hers. The vampire fighting thing isn’t one of the things I’d like but the friends and the strength are things I wouldn’t mind. Have you EVER seen Willow betray Buffy? I mean besides that time she turned super evil, skinned a guy alive and tried to end the world but that was different, she was taken over by evil and stuff. Still, Willow and Zander are always there for her. Even if their social lives suffer, Buffy, Willow and Zander always stick together. That’s true friendship.

I know that none of this really makes sense, but then again nothing going on in my head does right now either. Bottom line, choose your friends wisely and be careful who you trust because some people, many people actually never grow up. They’re also not above backstabbing you in a desperate attempt at attention
